Growing demand for mass flow controllers in semiconductors industry driving the growth of Mass Flow Controller Market

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, February 06, 2020 ) MarketsandMarkets forecasts the mass flow controller market to grow from USD 1.1 billion in 2019 to USD 1.5 billion by 2024, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.2% during the forecast period. The major factors that are expected to be driving the mass flow controller market are growing demand for mass flow controllers in semiconductors industry and surging demand for intelligent flow meters in chemicals and water & wastewater industries. The objective of the report is to define, describe, and forecast the mass flow controller market size based on material type, sensor type, product, media type, flow rate, connectivity technology, application, end-use industry, and geography.

Driver: Growing demand for mass flow controllers in semiconductors industry

The mass flow controller is an important semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The quality and efficiency of an MFC play a major role in the success or failure of the semiconductor manufacturing process. Mass flow controllers are used in the semiconductors industry for various applications such as wafer cleaning, layer deposition, thin film deposition, coating applications, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, vacuum sputtering, plasma coating, surface treatment, thermal spraying and painting, semiconductor chip making, and plasma etching. MFCs are used to measure and control the flow of gases and liquids..

Restraint: Variations in differential pressure creates offset in flow measurement

Factors such as tuning issues and high fluctuations in differential pressure create problems for high pressure applications. For example, in research reactors, the pressure needs to be changed during testing, or these reactors may require the dispensed gas to generate initial reactor pressure. In this case, there is a major change in the differential pressure that can cause inaccurate flow. For a few specific applications, the outlet pressure has to be significantly higher than the specified and configured pressure of the mass flow controller; this mainly causes tuning and flow range problems.

Opportunity: Growing opportunities in pharmaceutical and medical equipment

A number of applications in medical and pharmaceuticals industries require efficient and reliable measurement of gas or liquid flow. For example, ventilation devices used during emergency treatment are required for providing an optimum flow of oxygen to the ailing patient. In this case, the performance capability of mass flow controllers is crucial. Also, controllers used in medical equipment must be significantly faster than those used in industrial applications as these controllers need to follow the patient’s breathing pattern. Technologically advanced devices in medical and healthcare industries are extending the life expectancy of people. Thus, the requirement of mobile medical system solutions during emergencies, transport, and disaster scenarios are likely to provide huge opportunities to mass flow controller manufacturers.

Challenge: Media dependency in calibration of mass flow controller

Generally, mass flow controllers are calibrated for gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, argon, helium, hydrogen, methane, natural gas, propane, ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and other various gas mixtures. Calibration done with these gases will be ideal for applications that require less precision or accuracy. For applications that require high accuracy and precision, the calibration of mass flow controllers needs to be done with respective operating gas. Similarly, mass flow controllers that are used to control and monitor the liquid medium need fluid-dependent calibration. For example, in the semiconductors industry, processes that involve coating and deposition of gases heavily depend on the performance and stability of mass flow controllers. Also, in bioreactors, gas flow rates are crucial, while in the fuel cell testing process, the testing requires accurate measurement of hydrogen and other gas flows. Such calibration activities incur an additional maintenance cost of mass flow controllers. As these calibrations differ by each gas or liquid, the operating cost of mass flow controllers increases significantly.

Rising adoption of mass flow controllers across different end-use industries such as semiconductors, oil & gas, and chemicals to boost demand for mass flow controllers in APAC during forecast period

APAC is expected to dominate the mass flow controller during the forecast period. Increasing investments in the semiconductors industry and rising demand for efficient devices for measurement and control, and industrial automation are among the major factors driving the growth of the market in this region. Most of the key players operating in the mass flow controller market have their production capacity in APAC as the production cost in this region is lower than that of in other regions.

Bronkhorst High-Tech (Netherlands), Brooks Instrument (US), Burkert Fluid Control Systems (Germany), MKS Instruments (US), Sierra Instruments (US), Horiba (Japan), Sensirion (Switzerland), Alicat Scientific (US), and Teledyne Hastings Instruments (US) are among a few major players in the mass flow controller market.
